Applications
TBC removal
For the transportation or storage of unsaturated monomers like butadiene and styrene, polymerization inhibitors such as TBC (4-Tert-Butyl Catechol) are commonly used.
Compalox® AN/V 813 and AN/V 812 granulated activated alumina is very efficient in selectively removing TBC. Additionally, it can eliminate water, catalyst residues, and hydrocarbons, while minimizing reactivity toward olefins. Available in both promoted and non-promoted versions, Compalox activated alumina features a high surface area and optimized pore distribution, making it ideal for this application. Its excellent adsorption capacity and high mechanical strength ensure a long service life.
Organometallic Catalyst removal
Organometallic catalysts are essential in the polymerization of olefins, such as Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), as well as Polystyrene (PS), Thermoplastic Polyester (TPE), and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) or others.
Compalox® AN/V 812 granulated activated alumina is very efficient in selective removal of organometallic catalyst residues. It also effectively removes water and hydrocarbons, while minimizing reactivity toward olefins. Available in both promoted and non-promoted versions, Compalox activated alumina features a high surface area and optimized pore distribution, making it ideal for this application. Its excellent adsorption capacity and high mechanical strength ensure a long service life.
Sulfur Species removal
Sulfur compounds such as carbon disulfide (CS₂), carbonyl sulfide (COS), and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) are commonly found in oil and gas due to natural presence or formation during extraction and refining. These contaminants are toxic, corrosive, and can deactivate catalysts, making their removal essential from LPG, NGL, olefins, spent oil, and air.
Compalox® granulated activated alumina is very efficient in removal of CS₂, COS, and H₂S. It converts COS into H₂S and CO₂ in hydrocarbon gas and liquid streams and effectively adsorbs H₂S, CS₂, and CO₂. It is available as AN/V 813 for liquids, AN/V 850 for gases and as promoted and non-promoted grades to suit specific process needs. Compalox® activated alumina features a high surface area and optimized pore distribution, making it ideal for this application. Its excellent adsorption capacity and high mechanical strength ensure a long service life, with multiple regeneration cycles possible.
Purification of Drinking Water
Arsenic and fluoride are significant inorganic contaminants in drinking water, posing serious health risks (WHO, 2004). Groundwater can naturally contain these due to geological sources, with additional contributions from mining, agriculture, and industry.
Fluoride levels range from <0.01mg/l to >4mg/l. While beneficial at low doses (around 1.0mg/l), levels above 1.5mg/l can cause dental and skeletal fluorosis. Arsenic, a known toxin and carcinogen, varies from <10µg/l to thousands of µg/l. WHO's guideline for arsenic is 10µg/l. Efficient de-fluorination and de-arsenation solutions are needed, especially in areas with high levels of fluoride or arsenic in groundwater.
Compalox® AN/V 813 activated alumina offers high surface area and optimized pore distribution, making it ideal for fluoride and arsenic removal. Its excellent adsorption capacity and high mechanical strength ensure a long service life, with multiple regeneration cycles possible.
H₂O₂ processing
The primary method for producing hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is the anthraquinone process, which includes a crucial step: regenerating the working solution.
Compalox® AN/V 813 and AN/V 802 activated alumina granulate is used in this process for regeneration of the working solution. It serves two main functions: acting as a catalyst for dehydrogenation and de-epoxidation reactions and removing degradation products from the working solution through adsorption.
Fluoride Removal in HF Alkylation
In an HF Alkylation process unit, purified light olefins (C3 and C4) from Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) are combined with isobutane to produce alkylate, a high-octane product for gasoline blending. Effluent streams, mainly propane, butane, isobutane, and alkylate, contain HF and organic fluoride contaminants that need to be removed.
Compalox® AN/V 825 and AN/V 827 granulated activated alumina is very efficient in selective removal of HF and fluorinated hydrocarbons from HF Alkylation plant streams. It decomposes organic fluoride to HF, which then reacts with its surface, forming water and aluminum fluoride, a stable compound on the alumina surface. Available in both promoted and non-promoted versions, Compalox activated alumina features a high surface area and optimized pore distribution, making it ideal for this application. Its excellent adsorption capacity and high mechanical strength ensure a long service life.
Mercury removal
Mercury contamination can occur in both gas and liquid phases across the refining, petrochemical, natural gas, and industrial gas sectors. It may be present in various forms, including elemental (metallic) mercury and organic mercury compounds.
Compalox® AN/V 813 is a high-performance activated alumina granulate for efficient mercury removal. It is available in both promoted and non-promoted grades, offering flexibility to meet different process requirements.
Oxygenate and Other Polar Compound removal
Polar contaminants – such as oxygen-, nitrogen-, and sulfur-containing compounds – must be efficiently removed from hydrocarbon streams to protect processes and catalysts. These include alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, and carboxylic acids, commonly found in feedstocks for C4 isomerization, alkylation, and MTBE production.
In polymerization processes (e.g., polyethylene and polypropylene), oxygenates in monomer, comonomer, and recycle solvent streams can deactivate catalysts and degrade product quality. Additionally, water and mercaptans must be removed from both gas and liquid streams to prevent corrosion and fouling.
Compalox® AN/V 813 is a high-performance activated alumina granulate designed for the selective adsorption of oxygenates and other polar compounds. Available in promoted and non-promoted grades, it offers high surface area, optimized pore structure, excellent adsorption capacity, and superior mechanical strength. It ensures long service life and stable performance. Regeneration temperatures should not exceed 340°C.
Air and gas drying
Industrial gases and liquids – such as air, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons – require reliable drying agents with excellent thermal stability, particularly in TSA (Thermal Swing Adsorption) systems.
Compalox® AN/V 813 is a high-performance activated alumina granulate for efficient air and gas drying. It offers outstanding cyclic stability under TSA conditions, thanks to its resistance to hydrothermal aging. Key benefits include exceptional durability during repeated thermal cycles, stable performance at regeneration temperatures up to 230°C, without degradation of the adsorbent, and consistent moisture removal across a wide range of operating conditions. This makes Compalox® AN/V 813 an ideal choice for demanding drying applications in industrial gas processing.
Recycling of Waste Oil
Waste oils from petroleum, vegetable oils (e.g., corn, soybean, sunflower, palm, and olive), wood-based oils and used cooking oils can contain a wide range of contaminants, including:
- Water
- Sulfur, nitrogen and oxygenate species
- Heavy metals
- Coke, asphaltenes and chemical additives
Compalox® activated alumina granulate, with its highly porous structure, is ideal for use in solid adsorbent purification units positioned upstream of pyrolysis units, steam crackers, hydrotreaters, or selective hydrogenation units. These systems help ensure that feedstocks meet the required contaminant thresholds for downstream processing into transportation fuels, petrochemicals and food-grade products. Operating temperatures range from 30 – 150°C for adsorption, with regeneration steps (including carbon burn-off) up to 700°C.
